Harlem Heroes

Story:

The year is 2050. The game of Aeroball  has swept the world. It's Football, Boxing, Kung Fu and Basket ball all rolled into one. One of the top team is the all-black Harlem Heroes who plays aeroball without body-armour. After the preliminary round of the world aeroball championship, their hover-power 'road-liner' crashed and there were only 4 survivors, Giant, Slim, Hairy and Louis who now is just a brain. But still he firmly proposes to the other survivors to create a new team and win the championship (5 pages).

Comments:

This strip is clearly a mix of 'Harlem Globe Trotter' and 'Rollerball'. Dave Gibbons is credited for the 4 first pages and Carlos Trigo for the last. 'The Complete Harlem Heroes' GN published in 2010 displays also the first four pages originally drawn by Carlos Trigo.

Invasion

Story:

In the near future (1999?) Britain has been invaded by Volgan for their oil (Volgan are Soviet lookalike led by Marshal Vashkov) and lies in anguish under the boot-heel of tyranny. The royal Family has fled to exile in Canada where the resistance is begin to organise itself. Lorry driver Bill Savage returns to London to find a stray shell has destroyed his family home, killing his wife and kids. So now, with only his shotgun in hand, he declares a personal war against the Volgan (6 pages).

Comments:

Note that originally, Bill Savage shot a Volgan in the back in the final sequence, but the scene had to be redrawn by Kevin O'Neill.

Dan Dare

Story:

2177 AD, the ageing space freighter 'Sirius' is being ferried by commander Dan Dare to the space museum on the Moon. But as they pass by Jupiter, they are being sucked in by something alive on the giant planet, and soon the Sirius is ripped apart. Dan Dare has just made away in a rocket escape craft and is probably the only survivor. Soon after returning on Lunaciti's S.A.S.A. headquarters (Solar Astronautical and Space Administration), he is relieved of his command to attend court martial because the solar fleet controller doesn't believe there is life on Jupiter. But instead, Dan Dare decides to board the huge cruiser 'Odyssey' to investigate for himself what goes on near Jupiter (5 pages).

Comments:

However 2000 AD was intend by Pat Mills as a magazine displaying "all leading" strips, Dan Dare was clearly intend to be the incentive series in these very early days. Indeed, it's the only strip with coloured pages and Massimo Bellardinelli is the only artist credited in this firts prog.

Soon after a stampede follows but Reagan and Joe eventually manages to stop the herd. Next day they arrived to base three where the beasts are slaughtered and beamed to the 23rd century (6 pages).

Comments:

Earl Reagan under the pencils of Boix looks a lot like Robert Mitchum. The meat factory had to be redrawn by Kevin O'Neill.
